Born Jamesetta Hawkins in 1938, the singer who was nicknamed Miss Peaches crossed genres, from blues and rhythm and blues to rock and roll, soul, gospel and jazz. Tassajara Hot Springs suffered major damage from a 1,400 acre fire in September of 1949. The fire trapped sixty-two people at the resort, forty guests and 22 employees. Cartoonist Gus Arriola, whose long-running "Gordo" was one of the first syndicated comic strips to celebrate Hispanic culture. Arriola, who was born in Arizona but of Mexican-American descent, started drawing "Gordo" in 1941. Eldon Dedini was a cartoonist whose work has appeared in Esquire, The New Yorker, Playboy and elsewhere. He received the National Cartoonists Society Gag Cartoon Award for 1958, 1961, 1964 and 1988 for his work. Kalisa Moore, owner of Kalisa's on Cannery Row across the street from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Moore opened the restaurant on July 5, 1958.
