Larry Burrows, 1967

Renowned photojournalist Larry Burrows at the Del Monte Lodge in Pebble Beach for the Life Magazine advertising sales convention on June 7, 1967. Burrows, best known for his pictures of the American involvement in the Vietnam War, was in Pebble Beach as the guests of Life Magazine. Burrows covered the Vietnam War from 1962 until his death. Burrows died with fellow photojournalists Henri Huet, Kent Potter and Keisaburo Shimamoto, when their helicopter was shot down over Laos on February 10, 1971. (Monterey County Herald archives)

Diablo Canyon, 1973


Construction of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant in San Luis Obispo County on January 15, 1973. Pacific Gas & Electric Company went through six years of hearings, referenda and litigation to have the Diablo Canyon plant approved. A principal concern about the plant is whether it can be sufficiently earthquake-proof. The site was deemed safe when construction started in 1968. Unit One was commissioned on May 7, 1985 and Unit Two on March 13, 1986. (Monterey County Herald Archives)

Fans and friends of Cannery Row's 812 Cinema gathered at the theater on May 21, 1981 in peaceful protest over the eviction of the theater by its landlord. The theater, known for its offbeat movies and use of pillows instead of standard theater seating operated on Cannery Row for 11 years. The owners went on to open the Dream Theater. Thrifty Drugs opening, 1967


Thrifty Drug Store became the first retail operation to open for business in the Del Monte Shopping Center in Monterey on Thursday, July 13, 1967. Taking part in the symbolic key ceremony at the Thrifty store were, Fred Palmer, store manager, Monterey City Attorney William Marsh, Councilman Joseph G. Ansel, Bill Henry vice president in charge of store operations for Thrifty's chain and Monterey City Manager John Nail.
