Monterey County has a rich and colorful history. The Monterey County Herald has been there to cover the names and places that make our county unique. With some “never seen before” images from our archives, The Herald hopes to jar your memory and to participate in this ongoing look back on the history of Monterey County.
Took boot camp in 2/1974. Super lucky because the drill sergeant was a local guy and knew my sister (and liked her) from SHS and my parents resided on the Monterey peninsula. Got to go home and drive my parent's car with blue officer sticker on rear bumper although I was a private. Still remember taking a fenced in boring class overlooking Hwy 1 and wishing I was back home. Viet Nam war was ending and I spent 18 months in Korea. I was 18 then.
