Alvarado St. 1958-2009



Alvarado Street in Monterey during the 1958 urban revitalization project juxtaposed to a present day photo from approximately the same location. Notice the demolition of The Keg, where Cibo Restaurant is located today. Wells Fargo Bank and the State Theatre are noticeable in both photos.

Pietro Ferrante


On this post I need your help. This is a photo from the Herald's archive with the caption reading, Mr. & Mrs. Pietro Ferrante on Sept. 13, 1951 in Monterey. We all know that Pietro Ferrante was one of the pioneers in the commercial fishing industry in Monterey. He lived from 1867 to 1954. What I need to know is the name of his wife sitting next to him. Lady Bird Johnson 1966



In September of 1966 Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Johnson visited Monterey County. She was accompanied by Gov. Edmund G. Brown on her trip. Governor Brown introduced her to a huge crowd at Colton Hall in Monterey. She planted a tree in Pacific Grove. Lady Bird held a ceremony at the Bixby Creek Bridge, where she named Highway One in Monterey County as the first official scenic highway of California.

Joan Baez and Bob Dylan, 1964 in Monterey


Joan Baez and Bob Dylan performing at the Monterey County Fairgrounds on Sept. 4, 1964. According to a Herald article, Joan Baez was doing a benefit concert for Pioneer House, a new inter-racial, non-profit nursery school in Seaside. Bob Dylan was a special guest of Baez. The concert was on a Saturday night and raised about $5,000 for the school.

Los Burros Gold Mine, 1958



James B. Pauley and Gerald A. Doyle at the Los Burros mine in southern Monterey County in the Los Padres Nastional Forest. In these photos taken on March 4, 1958 Pauley and Doyle were prospecting the mine full time for gold. Both Pauley and Doyle are still mining in Nevada.
