Artist Chang Dai-Chien, 1972

Chinese artist Chang Dai-Chien, demonstrating his painting style in Pebble Beach in 1972.  Chang Dai-Chien or Zhang Daqian was one of the best-known and most prodigious Chinese artists of the twentieth century. Originally known as a guohua painter, by the 1960s he was also renowned as a modern impressionist and expressionist painter.  (Monterey County Herald archives)

  1. The female on the left of the picture was Fang Zhaoling (1914-2006), who was the student of Chang since 1953. This picture was probably taken on 1970.

    In 1970 Chang invited Fang to stay with him for studying the Chang's painting philosophy and helping Chang's daily routine. Fang stayed for the whole year in 1970 and this picture was taken during that period.
