Kenneth Melville, 1981

Kenneth Melville, aka, Blanco Diablo in his cabin in the Willow Creek area of Big Sur on April 12, 1981. Melville worked a gold mine for over 50 years in the area and was at odds with the U.S. Forest Service who wanted to have his cabin and other surrounding structures razed. 1. When I was a US Forest Service Fire Lookout at Cone Peak, (pre-cell phone days), we communicated via CB radio. in 1986 I heard Blanco Diablo on the CB at sunset, singing all the verses to Home on the Range. I had no idea there were verses besides the main one...... he was quite a character... those were the days.

  2. Robert Fish and I had a great time interviewing him and exploring his mining claim for The Herald, back in the day.
