Fourth of July, 1946

1946 Fourth of July Parade in Monterey that was described as the biggest local parade ever.  Fort Ord troops from ships anchored in the bay attend the parade and the centennial flag raising.  (Monterey County Herald Archives)

  1. What is the airship in the background? The USS Macon, stationed at Moffett Field, used to frequent the bay, but she crashed on Feb 12, 1935 off Point Sur. This was the end of an era for rigid navy airships. If this is the Macon, the photo would be from the 30's. This must be another, smaller airship, perhaps a blimp? Does anyone know? Jim Oswald.

  2. The State Theater has "Strange Affair" on the billboard (1944) and the blimp has US Navy. Not sure if that helps. T.Garnero
